About Providence Diary

Providence Diary is a photo project to visually chronicle the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the 25 neighborhoods of Providence. Its goal is to create a collective portrait of our city through the eyes of its citizens as we confront the effects of this pandemic.

Photos taken on phones are ubiquitous in our culture and are the simplest and most direct medium for self-expression. Through community outreach we are collecting photographs taken from March through June by the widest range of individuals (ages, genders, ethnicities) living in our diverse neighborhoods. This collective portrait will both help in our processing of the pandemic now, and serve as documentation for future generations to understand the range of stories and emotions experienced.

Providence Diary will initially be published as an e-book and accessible via the Providence Public Library’s COVID-19 Archive. Future plans are for a printed version and exhibition as funding becomes available.
